Consumption of coal went up in the first quarter of the year

In the first quarter of 2006, the consumption of coal in electricity and heat generation amounted to approximately 1.8 million tonnes (46,000 TJ). The consumption went up by 31 per cent from the corresponding quarter of the previous year and was higher than one year earlier in all months of the examined quarter. The growth was caused by colder weather than in the year before, which increased the demand for electricity and district heat. In relative terms, the use of coal increased most in the production of condensing power.

As of the beginning of this year, data will also be collected and published on the stocks of coal in connection with those on the consumption of coal. In this publication coal stocks include data only from companies that answer the questionnaire. Figures have not been corrected to also represent other coal user's stocks.
