According to Statistics Finland, nearly 28 per cent less hard coal was used as fuel in power and heat production in 2011 than in the year before. Its total consumption as fuel in the generation of electricity and heat amounted to 4.2 million tonnes, corresponding to 106 petajoules in energy content. In the last quarter of the year, consumption of hard coal amounted to around 0.9 million tonnes, which was 54 per cent less than one year earlier. Use of hard coal decreased in plants of separate production of electricity, which consumed 47 less of it than a year earlier in 2010.
