Total energy consumption decreased slightly in the first quarter of the year

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, in the first quarter of 2007 total energy consumption amounted to 411,000 terajoules, or two per cent less than in the corresponding quarter of 2006. Total consumption of electricity was also two per cent below its respective amount in last year's first quarter. Consumption of energy decreased primarily because the beginning of the year was warmer this year than last year. The fact that industrial output fell slightly short of last year's output also had a decreasing effect on energy consumption.

Consumption of peat increased by 13 per cent and production of hydro power by seven per cent. Consumption of hard coal (which here also includes coke and blast furnace gas) went up by two per cent. Use of wood-based fuels, on the contrary, decreased by 10 per cent and use of natural gas by nine per cent. Net imports of electricity declined by 11 per cent. Low price of emission rights was one of the factors that improved the competitiveness of peat and hard coal as fuels in electricity and heat generation in the early part of the year. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and consumption of energy totalled 18 million tonnes, i.e. remained on level with the first quarter of the year before.
