Total energy consumption rose by 9 per cent in 2010

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, total energy consumption in 2010 amounted to 1,445 PJ (petajoule), or 402 TWh, which was nine per cent more than in 2009. Consumption of electricity amounted to 87.5 TWh, up by 7.6 per cent. Energy consumption was put up by the greater need by the recovery of industrial production and for heating of buildings. Total energy consumption went up to nearly the same level as before the economic downturn. The 11 per cent growth in the use of fossil fuels and the over 30 per cent increase in the use of peat put carbon dioxide emissions of energy production and use up by 15.3 per cent. The use of renewable energy grew by 12.5 per cent. According to the preliminary data for 2010, renewable energy accounted for 26.3 per cent of total energy consumption.

Total energy consumption went up by 8.8 per cent in January to September

According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, over the January to September period of 2010 total energy consumption amounted to 1,032 petajoule, or 287 TWh, which was 8.8 per cent more than in the corresponding period of the year before. In the first three quarters of the year, the consumption of elec-tricity totalled 63.5 TWh, which was 8.2 per cent more than in the previous year. Energy consumption was put up by the cold weather in the early part of the year and by the recovery of industrial production. The increased use of fossil fuels and peat put carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy up by 15.3 per cent from the previous year. Fuel prices have risen almost to the level of 2008. The prices of domestic fuels have risen more moderately.

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption grew by 10 per cent year-on-year in the first half of the year. Energy consumption was put up by the cold weather in the early part of the year and by the recovered industrial production. Consumption of electricity rose by eight per cent in January to June. Over 60 per cent more electricity was exported than in the previous year. Carbon dioxide emissions of energy production and use grew by nearly 20 per cent compared with one year previously. Emissions were put up by increased use of fossil fuels.

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption grew by 12 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of the year. Consumption of electricity increased by 7 per cent. Energy consumption was put up by the cold weather in the early part of the year and by the recovered industrial production from the year before. Carbon dioxide emissions from energy production and use grew by nearly 20 per cent from twelve months ago. Emissions were put up by increased use of fossil fuels. Over 90 per cent more condensate power was produced with coal than one year earlier.

Total energy consumption diminished by 5.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2009

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption amounted to 370 petajoule in the January to March period of 2009, which was 5.8 per cent less than in the corresponding period of the year before. Colder weather than in the previous year increased the need for heating energy, but the steep drop of industrial output in the early part of the year put total consumption into a clear decline. The consumption of wood-based fuels diminished by 15 per cent, the use of peat by 17 per cent and that of natural gas by 7 per cent.

Total energy consumption fell by 4 per cent in January to September

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption amounted to 1,030 petajoule in the January to September period of 2008, which was 4 per cent less than in the corresponding period of the year before. Consumption of electricity totalled 65 terawatt hours (TWh), i.e. 2.4 per cent less than in the year before. Carbon dioxide emissions from the production and use of energy diminished by nearly 10 per cent from the previous year. The favourable water situation in the Nordic countries and ample production of hydro power reduced the consumption of fossil fuels in electricity generation, which led to the markedly bigger reduction in emissions than in total consumption of energy. The mild winter also contributed to the reduced need for heating energy. Energy consumption in industry was also falling by 5 per cent.
