A 3-character level classification of causes of death presented in the statistics on causes of death

The 3-character level of the international ICD-10 classification (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems) is the most accurate publication level in the StatFin database. The classification is available starting from the data for 1998.

The classification includes all codes from the international ICD10 classification at the 3-character level that have been valid as the underlying cause of death in the statistics since 1998. The main groups and the sum levels added within the main groups are presented in accordance with the international classification. Code R999 ‘No death certificate’ has been separated from code R99 ‘Other ill-defined and unspecified causes of mortality’.
Code changes:
Code C97 was removed in 2005. Since 2005, codes C00-C80 include deaths due to this cause.
A new code I15 was added in 2005. Before 2005, codes I00-I13 included mainly deaths due to this cause.
Codes P71 and P74 was removed in 2005. Since 2005, other P codes include deaths due to this cause.
Since 2007 alcohol-induced acute pancreatitis belongs to code K85 instead of code K86.
A new code J09 was added 2009.
Codes C78-C79 was removed in 2012 and code C77 in 2013. Codes C00-C80 will include deaths due to these causes.
Since 2012 X42 includes deaths due to use of drug tramadol instead of code X40.
A new code W46 was added in 2013. Before 2013, code W45 included deaths due to this cause.
A new code C86 was added in 2015. Before 2015, code C84 included deaths due to this cause.
A new code K64 was added in 2015 to replace code I84, which went out of use/was removed.
A new code A97 was added in 2019 to replace codes A90-A91, which went out of use/was removed.
Code B59 was removed in 2019. Since 2019 code B48 include deaths due to this cause.
A new code G14 was added in 2019. Before 2019, codes G10-G12 included mainly deaths due to this cause.
A new code U07 was added in 2020 including COVID-19 virus infections U071 and U072.
New codes U10 and U12 were added 2021. -
