According to Statistics Finland, a total of 23,800 university degrees were attained in Finland in 2009. The number of university degrees completed returned in 2009 close to the level of 2007. The number of degrees attained in 2008 was exceptionally high (38,200). The record growth in the number of degrees in 2008 was explained by the ending of the transition period connected to the university degree revision in most fields of education in summer 2008. Of the degrees attained in 2009, 10,800 were lower university degrees and 10,500 higher university degrees. Completed degrees at the doctorate level numbered 1,600. The number of degrees attained by foreign citizens was 1,100. Women completed 62 per cent of all university degrees.
