The annual Social Assistance statistics are based on the National Institute for Health and Welfare Social Assistance Register, in which data are gathered from municipalities on recipient households and their size and structure and the duration and level of assistance. In addition, cross-sectional data are gathered on clients' income sources and primary economic activity in November. The register has been kept since 1985. Corresponding data for 1969–1983 are available in the statistics on the earlier type of public assistance.
