General government net financial assets decreased by EUR 4 billion in the last quarter of 2007
General government total net financial assets decreased by EUR 4 billion in the last quarter of 2007. The net financial assets of social security funds decreased most, or by EUR 2.1 billion, while those of central government and local government both fell by EUR 0.9 billion. Nevertheless, general government's financial claims went up by EUR 1.7 billion, because central government's financial assets grew by EUR 3.9 billion while social security funds' financial assets decreased by EUR 1.7 billion and local government's assets by EUR 0.5 billion. Respectively, according to financial accounts central government's debt grew by EUR 4.8 billion, local government's by EUR 0.5 billion and social security funds' by EUR 0.4 billion.
General government net financial assets, meaning the difference between its financial assets and liabilities, have grown almost without exception since the second quarter of 2003. Despite the fall in stock market rates at the end of 2007, at EUR 127 billion, general government net financial assets were clearly higher in 2007 than in previous years: at the end of 2006 they stood at EUR 112.5 billion and at the end of 2005 at EUR 90.8 billion. The strong financial position of social security funds has kept general government net financial assets positive throughout the time series, and central government's net financial assets have also been positive since the first quarter of 2006.
