Statistics Finland compiles statistics on students and obtained qualifications in vocational education. The first annual statistics that become available are preliminary data on vocational education provided by educational institutions at the cut-off point of time of 20 September, and on participation in skills examinations during the calendar year. The final statistics are compiled from collected individual-based data. The final statistics on vocational education contain data on students registered at educational institutions on 20 September as participants in education leading to a vocational qualification, attainers of a qualification during the calendar year, and on participants in apprenticeship training for the calendar year. In accordance with the Statistics Act, the personal data from which these statistics are compiled are confidential. As a rule, the statistics produced from them are public.
Data concerning students and attainers of qualifications in the vocational education provided in educational institutions and in apprenticeship training are available by both curriculum-based vocational education (initial vocational qualifications) and on preparatory vocational education for skills examinations (initial vocational qualifications, further vocational qualifications, specialist vocational qualifications). Data are also available on educational institutions, passed examinations by educational programme and on the regional distribution of education.
Preliminary data include students according to the situation on 20 September and participants in skills examinations during the calendar year. The final statistics contain data on new students, students and attainers of qualifications in school-type degree-oriented vocational education and apprenticeship training.
The statistical data contain Statistics Finland's, the Educational Administration's and international classifications of fields and levels of education, classifications describing types of educational institutions and various regional and demographic classifications.
Statistics Finland collects preliminary data on students in vocational education by an electronic Internet form and on participants in skills examinations by an Excel form. Final individual-based student and qualification data are collected electronically from educational institutions providing vocational education and from providers of apprenticeship training.
Statistics are produced yearly.
Preliminary data on students are completed in November of the same year. Preliminary data on those having participated in skills examinations are complete in April of the following year. Individual-based student, qualification and apprenticeship data are finalised in the following year's September.
Data on vocational education have been collected by Statistics Finland since the early 1970s. The time series has been produced since the 1980s. Examinations of the time series should allow for changes that have taken place in the covered topic.
