According to Statistics Finland, income differentials narrowed in 2022 compared to the previous year. The real income of all income deciles decreased as a result of high inflation. The average income of the population in the lowest-income decile fell in real terms by 4.1 per cent and that of the highest-income decile by 5.9 per cent. The real income level of medium income earners (income deciles V to IX) was 3.0 per cent lower than in the previous year.

Key selections

  • The Gini coefficient received the value 28.6 in 2022. This was 0.5 percentage points lower than in 2021, so relative income differentials narrowed.
  • High inflation lowered average real income throughout the income distribution from 2021 to 2022.
  • A total of 730,800 persons belonged to low-income household-dwelling units, that is, 13.4 per cent of the dwelling population in 2022. The share grew by 0.2 percentage points from the previous year.
  • A total of 426,000 persons were at long-term risk of poverty, that is, besides 2022, they were at risk of poverty in at least two of the three previous years.
