Demand for biogas made an upturn after five years

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the consumption of biogas increased in Finland by 11 per cent in 2021 from the previous year. The growth was based on the increased number of biogas plants and increased utilisation of produced biogas as surplus combustion decreased. Co-processing plants and on-farm agricultural waste facilities increased their biogas production the most.

  • The amount of biogas produced by co-processing plants increased by 11 per cent and that delivered to consumption by 19 per cent, while surplus combustion decreased by 32 per cent. The amount of biogas produced by on-farm agricultural waste facilities and delivered to consumption through them also grew 1.5-fold from the previous year.
  • The amount of biogas produced by biogas plants connected to wastewater treatment plants decreased by seven per cent, but the consumption of gas produced by them rose by three per cent as the amount of surplus combustion diminished by 55 per cent in 2021.
  • The biogas collection by landfill gas recovery plants decreased by seven per cent from the previous year.
  • Biogas is a renewable energy source and it is produced from organic waste materials, such as biowaste, sewage sludge, agricultural side streams and agrobiomass. At landfill plants, biogas generated in the decomposition of organic landfill waste is recovered.
  • Biogas accounted for about half a per cent of Finland's consumption of renewable energy in 2021.
