In enterprises, most environmental protection services were used in water and waste management, EUR 1,697 million. In addition, water and waste management invested most in environmental protection, EUR 377 million. The second most environmental protection services were used in manufacturing, EUR 234 million. Of manufacturing industries, the biggest users of environmental protection services were the metal and forest industries. Investments in environmental protection in manufacturing amounted to EUR 167 million. The chemical industry invested most.

Major environmental protection investments were made in the industry of mining and quarrying in 2016 and it was visible as a growth in total environmental protection expenditure in the field. In contrast, energy supply invested considerably less in environmental protection than one year previously.

The data for 2016 on public sector income and capital transfers are not comparable with before due to classification revisions caused by the change of the Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland. In addition, the data on the industries of water and waste management for 2014 and 2015 have become revised.

The concepts and definitions of the statistics are based on EU Regulation (No 691/2011 and 538/2014) on European environmental economic accounts and on Eurostat's manuals.
