Finland's preliminary population figure 5,432,305 at the end of April

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of April was 5,432,305. Over the January to April period, Finland's population increased by 5,650 persons, which is 100 persons less than for the corresponding period of the year before. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 4,700 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 950 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for the January to April period, 8,600 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 3,900 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 250 higher and the number of emigrants 100 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 2,100 of the immigrants and 2,750 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During the January to April period 19,150 children were born, which is 450 children less than in the corresponding period of 2012. The number of deaths was 18,200, which is 200 lower than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 70,900 over the January to April period. Compared with the previous January to April period, the decrease was 1 700 migrations according to the municipal division of 2013.
