Finland's preliminary population figure 5,417,098 at the end of August

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of August was 5,417,098. Over the January to August period, Finland's population increased by 15,850 persons, which is 1,550 lower than in the respective period of one year previously. The main reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 10,000 higher than that of emigrants. Natural population growth, or excess of births to deaths, was 5,850 persons.

According to the preliminary statistics for the January to August period, 19,050 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 9,050 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 250 lower and the number of emigrants 650 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 5,550 of the immigrants and 6,250 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.

During the January to August period, 40,450 children were born, which is as many as in the corresponding period of 2011. The number of deaths was 34,600, which is 650 higher than one year earlier.

According to the preliminary data, the number of inter-municipal migrations totalled 188,300 over the January to August period. Compared with the previous January to August period, the decrease was 1,150 migrations according to the municipal division of 2012.
