Sea transport decreased in December

The goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 7.9 million tonnes in December 2021. Sea transport decreased by two per cent from last year's December. Exports decreased by three per cent and were 4.3 million tonnes. Import volume decreased by two per cent and amounted to 3.6 million tonnes.

General cargo was transported most, in total 1.3 million tonnes, which was 16 per cent of all transport. The second most transported were oil products, 0.9 million tonnes, and ores and concentrates, 0.9 million tonnes.

Container transport

A total of 0.9 million tonnes of containers were transported through Finnish ports in December 2021, which was 3 per cent less than in December 2020. The number of containers transported was 61,417 (109,175 TEU containers) 1) . Exports of containers went down by 6 per cent measured in tonnes and imports went up by 3 per cent compared to December 2020.

Vehicle transport

A total of 217,978 transport equipment were transported in foreign sea traffic in December 2021. Most transports of transport equipment were cars belonging to passengers. In December, 123,578 cars belonging to passengers were transported. The second most transported were trucks, 55,232 and truck trailers, 35,202.

Passenger traffic

A total of 692,740 persons were transported in passenger traffic in December 2021. In all, 325,906 passengers between Finland and Sweden, 358,609 passengers travelled between Finland and Estonia and 8,225 passengers between Finland and Germany. Compared with December 2020, the number of passengers more than doubled. Compared with December 2019, the number of passengers was, however, just 51 per cent. In December 2021, no passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.

A total of 92,772 tons of transport were registered through the canal in foreign traffic. Crude minerals and cement were transported most in vessels in foreign traffic, in total 37,364 tonnes. The second most transported was fertilizers.
