Turnover went down from the corresponding period of the previous year in nearly all manufacturing (C) sub-industries . The drop was fastest in the electrical and electronics industry (-9.8%), in the metal industry (-5.5%) and in the textile, clothing and leather industry (-4.2%). Only the food industry generated more turnover than in the year before (1.2%).

In the main categories of other industries, mining and quarrying increased by 2.6 per cent. Turnover in water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities contracted by 0.9 per cent and that of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 6.4 per cent from one year before.

When examining the whole of 2013, the drop in the turnover of manufacturing enterprises slowed down slightly in the middle of the year. In the last two quarters of the year, turnover contracted by around three per cent compared with the corresponding quarters of the previous year. On the level of the whole year, the turnover was 4.4 lower than in the previous year. Export turnover contracted by 3.3 per cent and domestic sales by 5.8 per cent compared to one year earlier.

The index of turnover in industry describes enterprises whose main industry is manufacturing. The calculation of the indices is based on the Tax Administration’s value added tax data which are supplemented with data obtained with Statistics Finland’s sales inquiry. The monthly turnovers of manufacturing enterprises can vary considerably, especially in the metal industries. The variation is mainly due to invoicing practices. The final invoice for major machinery deliveries and projects may be recorded in the sales of one month, even if the delivery had required the work of several months or years.
