Cubic volume covered by granted building permits decreased in January to March year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, 15.4 per cent fewer building permits were granted in the first quarter of 2018 than in the corresponding period of one year earlier. The cubic volume decreased in all main categories of buildings from one year back. The cubic volume declined most for industrial and warehouse buildings, and for commercial and office buildings. The cubic volume of residential building construction decreased by nearly one per cent.

Fewer permits for residential building construction

In January to March, cubic metres covered by permits for residential buildings amounted to 2.8 million. The cubic volume granted for detached houses went down by 18.3 per cent from one year back. The strong growth in the cubic volumes of residential blocks of flats that had continued for around one year slowed down to 4.2 per cent.

In January to March, building permits were granted for a total of 9,842 buildings, which is one per cent lower than in the same period of one year earlier.

Volume of building production is still growing

In the first quarter of 2018, the constant-price value or the volume of ongoing building production increased by 11.1 per cent year-on-year. The volume of residential building construction increased in the period by 15.3 per cent and that of other than residential building construction by 7.6 per cent. Measured by volume, 3.1 per cent fewer building projects than one year earlier were started in the same period. However, the number of residential building starts was 12.9 per cent higher than one year ago.

The data of the statistics on building and dwelling production are based on the building permit data of the Population Register Centre. The register data are supplemented as municipal building supervisors provide data to the Population Information System and the now published data can become revised.
