Comprehensive schools had 562,400 pupils in 2021

According to Statistics Finland’s education statistics, comprehensive schools had 562,400 pupils in 2021. The number of pupils in comprehensive schools fell by 0.7 per cent from the year before. Forty-nine per cent of the pupils were girls and 51 per cent were boys. A total of 366,900 pupils attended grades 1 to 6 of comprehensive schools and 185,300 pupils grades 7 to 9. The number of pupils in pre-primary education was 58,600, of whom 9,700 were in pre-primary education in schools and 48,900 in day care. A total of 1,000 pupils attended additional education (grade 10), of whom 400 in comprehensive schools.

In autumn 2021, a total of 445 pupils were being home-schooled. There were 342 pupils temporarily residing abroad. Time series data on students not studying in comprehensive schools can be found in the database table of this publication .

A total of 4,600 students were studying in basic education of adults. Of them, 54 per cent were men. Until 2019, data on basic education of adults have been published in the statistics on adult education of educational institutions .

The number of pupils in comprehensive school is derived by adding up pupils in the following types of educational institutions: comprehensive schools, comprehensive school level special education schools and comprehensive and general upper secondary level schools. Data can be retrieved from database table 133w. Pupils in comprehensive schools, 2020 to 2021 .
