Record number of immigrations in 2006

According to Statistics Finland, 22,450 persons immigrated to Finland from foreign countries during 2006. The number is 1,100 persons more than in the previous year and the highest during Finnish independence. Emigration from Finland decreased slightly and was 12,100 persons. During 2006 net immigration numbered 10,350 persons, which is the highest number since 1991.

During the past five years immigration into Finland from other EU countries has been higher than emigration from Finland to other EU countries. In 2006 Finland had a migration gain of 3,300 persons from other EU countries. Immigration into Finland from other EU countries has been growing since 1997. Emigration from Finland into other EU countries has remained stable during the past few years.

Migration between Finland and other EU countries 1992-2006

The number of intermunicipal migrations was 286,522 in 2006, which is 2,450 more than in the previous year. Migration inside regions decreased by 4,850 and migration between regions increased slightly. When looking at migration inside the country, the migration gain of the region of Uusimaa (2,550 persons) was the biggest and that of the region of Pirkanmaa the second biggest (2,400 persons). The regions of Lapland and North Karelia lost the most population in migration inside the country. In 2006, intramunicipal migrations numbered 579,050, which is 23,950 fewer than in 2005.
