Nights spent by resident tourists in Finland decreased by 15 per cent in October 2020

Overnight stays by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments declined by 14.8 per cent from last year and 1.05 million nights were recorded for them in October 2020. Overnight stays by resident tourists decreased outside Greater Helsinki by 3.6 per cent but in Greater Helsinki they declined by 50.2 per cent. Due to the situation caused by the coronavirus, overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 81.7 per cent and 0.08 million overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.13 million overnight stays, which was 32.3 per cent lower than one year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

Estonians were the biggest group of non-resident tourists in October 2020

Overnight stays did not increase from any of the most important countries. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians, down by 44,600 nights. Their overnight stays were 96.5 per cent down on October 2019.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Estonians with 10,900 overnight stays. The second largest group was Germans with 6,800 overnight stays. The third largest group was Swedes with 6,600 overnight stays, and fourth were U.S. tourists with 3,300 overnight stays.

In North-Ostrobothnia, overnight stays increased by 18 per cent in October 2020

Examined by region, overnight stays increased most in relative terms in North Ostrobothnia, by 17.9 per cent, and second most in Central Ostrobothnia, by 12.3 per cent. By contrast, the overall number of overnight stays declined most in relative terms in Uusimaa, by 63.4 per cent and second most in Ostrobothnia, by 51.8 per cent.

Accommodation establishments in Uusimaa recorded 31,000 overnight stays by non-resident tourists and accommodation establishments in Lapland 4,000. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 88.0 per cent in Uusimaa. In Lapland, overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 89.1 per cent from one year ago. The share of Uusimaa in all overnight stays by foreign visitors was 39 per cent and that of Lapland 5 per cent.

Overnight stays in hotels decreased by 38 per cent in October 2020

The total number of nights spent in hotels was 0.9 million, which was 38.4 per cent less than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 85.3 per cent and hotels recorded a total of 57,000 overnight stays for them. Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 0.84 million. The number was 21.3 per cent lower than in October 2019.

Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Central Ostrobothnia, 55.4 per cent, and in Kainuu, 50.5 per cent. In Helsinki, the hotel room occupancy rate was 22.7 per cent, 40.1 per cent in Tampere, 45.5 per cent in Turku, 60.6 per cent in Oulu and 24.4 per cent in Rovaniemi.

In October 2020, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 90.70 per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 111.24. There was a total of 50,711 hotel rooms available in Finland, which was 2,851 fewer than in October 2019.

Total number of nights spent decreased by 36 per cent in January to October 2020

In January to October 2020, a total of 12.73 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 35.5 per cent less than in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 10.6 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 2.14 million for non-resident tourists. The number of nights spent by resident tourists declined by 24.0 per cent and nights spent by non-resident tourists declined by 63.2 from the previous year.

Overnight stays declined from all of the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland. The smallest drop was seen in overnight stays by Estonians . Overnight stays by them declined by 70 800 nights. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians, down by 435,700 nights. Their overnight stays were 63.5 per cent down on January to October 2019. d

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Russians with 251,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was Germans with 228,000 overnight stays. The third largest group was Britons with 161,000 overnight stays , and fourth were French with 153,000 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was Estonians (133,000 nights), sixth was Dutch tourists (127,000 nights), seventh Swedes (92,000 nights) and eight was Chinese tourists (75,000 nights).
