Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 4,8 per cent in June

The growth in the number of nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments halted in May and decreased further in June 2018. Almost 590,000 nights spent were recorded for foreign visitors, which was 4.8 per cent lower than twelve months earlier. In contrast, the number of nights spent by resident tourists increased by 4.5 per cent and they overnighted almost 1.6 million times at accommodation establishments. In all, close on 2.2 million overnight stays were recorded at Finnish accommodation establishments, which was 1.8 per cent more than in June 2017. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

Overnight stays by British and Chinese visitors fell strongly in June

Finnish accommodation establishments recorded around 28,000 overnight stays for both British and Chinese visitors. The overnight stays of British visitors decreased by 20.9 per cent and those of Chinese visitors by 24.2 per cent from last year's June. The number of recorded nights spent by British visitors was highest in Uusimaa, nearly 19,000. Overnight stays by Chinese tourists took place mainly in Uusimaa, where slightly under 23,000 overnight stays were recorded for them. Good 318,000 overnight stays by foreign tourists were recorded in Uusimaa, which was 5.9 per cent lower than twelve months earlier. The share of Uusimaa in all nights spent by foreign visitors was 54 per cent.

Germany, Sweden and Russia the biggest countries of tourism in June

Germans were the largest group of foreign tourists with 75,000 stays, although their overnight stays fell by 10.0 per cent from last year. Swedes were the second biggest group and good 56,000 overnight stays were recorded for them at Finnish accommodation establishments, which was 7.1 per cent lower than one year before. Russians were third around 55,000 nights spent. The number of their overnight stays was 2.7 per cent lower than in June 2017. In contrast, overnight stays recorded for visitors from the United States increased by 3.1 per cent and they retained their fourth position with nearly 38,000 overnight stays.

Nights spent by visitors from almost all the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland decreased in June. In addition to those already mentioned above, the number of nights spent by Spanish tourists declined by 18.1 per cent and those by Italian visitors by 15.7 per cent from last year. Apart from visitors from the United States, overnight stays from the most important countries of tourism increased for only Norwegian, Estonian and Swiss tourists. Overnight stays by Norwegians grew by 11.3 per cent, Estonian 1.0 and those by Swiss tourists by 1.2 per cent.

Examined by region, the total number of overnight stays increased in June most in Päijät-Häme, up by 13.1 per cent. Overnight stays increased by 8.0 per cent in Varsinais-Suomi and by 6.6 per cent in Kanta-Häme. In Central Finland and Pohjois-Savo the growth amounted to five to six per cent. In contrast, the total number of overnight stays decreased in Ostrobothnia, by 10.7 per cent and in North Karelia, by 3.6 per cent. Overnight stays in the whole country increased in all by 1.8 per cent from last year.

Overnight stays at hotels increased by 1.6 per cent in June

In June 2018, the total number of nights spent at hotels was close on 1.6 million, which was 1.6 per cent more than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists decreased by 5.5 per cent and hotels recorded around 491,000 of them. Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 1.1 million. The number was 5.1 per cent higher than in June 2017.

The occupancy rate of hotel rooms was 57.6 per cent in June. One year earlier, it was 59.9 per cent. Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Uusimaa, 74.3 per cent, and Varsinais-Suomi, 64.8 per cent. In Vantaa, the hotel room occupancy rate was 73.0 per cent and in Turku, 70.9 per cent. The hotel room occupancy rate in Helsinki was 79.9 per cent.

In June 2018, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 104.55 per day for the whole country. Twelve months previously it was EUR 107.22.

Total number of nights spent at all accommodation establishments grew by 2.5 per cent in January to June 2018

In January to June 2018, the number of nights spent at accommodation establishments in Finland totalled nearly 10.3 million. This was 2.5 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year earlier. Slightly under 7.1 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and good 3.2 million for non-resident tourists. The overnight stays of resident visitors increased by 2.3 per cent and those of non-resident visitors by 3.0 per cent from the previous year's corresponding period.

The number of nights spent by Russian visitors at accommodation establishments in Finland totalled almost 418,000 in January to June 2018, which was 0.6 per cent up on the respective period of 2017. They were the biggest country of inbound tourism to Finland. German and British tourists came next. Overnight stays recorded for Germans increased by 2.1 per cent from the corresponding period last year and totalled good 299,000 at accommodation establishments. Overnight stays by British tourists numbered around 241,500 million, which was roughly the same as in the same period last year. Swedes were the fourth largest group with 228,000 overnight stays. However, their number was 5.9 per cent lower than in in January to June 2017. French visitors kept their fifth position and nearly 182,000 nights were recorded for them. Dutch tourists came sixth with some 153,000 overnight stays. Overnight stays by French visitors increased by 8.6 per cent and those by Dutch visitors by 12.3 per cent. Overnight stays recorded at accommodation establishments for Chinese visitors totalled 150,000, which was 6.6 per cent more than in the corresponding period of the year before.

Among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by Spanish visitors increased most in addition to Dutch visitors in January to June 2018. Overnight stays recorded for Spanish visitors numbered 67,000, which was 11.6 per cent more than in January to June 2017. In addition to those already mentioned above, the number of overnight stays at accommodation establishments recorded for tourists from the United States was nearly 124,000, which was 5.7 per cent more than one year before. The biggest drop came from overnight stays by Japanese visitors. They spent 87,000 nights at Finnish accommodation establishments, which was 15.3 per cent down on the same period twelve months earlier.
