Nights spent by domestic tourists increased by nearly 11 per cent in March

The number of recorded nights spent by domestic tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in March 2010 was 1.2 million, which is almost 11 per cent more than in March 2009. Overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by nearly five per cent from March 2009. The total number of nights spent grew by nine per cent from March 2009 and rose to 1.6 million overnightings. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Russians made up the largest group of foreign tourists in March 2010. They spent 68,000 nights at Finnish accommodation establishments. The number was nine per cent higher than one year previously. Germans were in the second position with 41,000 overnightings. The number of their overnight stays has remained on level with the previous year. British tourists came third with 32,000 overnight stays at accommodation establishments, which was 15 per cent less than in March 2009. Overnights by Estonians increased the most, up by as much as 47 per cent. They spent 22,000 nights at Finnish accommodation establishments.
