Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 7.5 per cent in May

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in May 2009 was 338,000, which is 7.5 per cent less than in May 2008. The number of nights spent by resident tourists fell as well, by 6 per cent from last year. The total number of overnight stays decreased by 7 per cent from the year before. Accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.2 million of them in May 2009. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Overnight stays at accommodation establishments decreased during the first months of the year and continued to decrease in May. Only Russian, Dutch and Spanish visitors spent more nights than in the year before. By contrast, the number of overnight stays by visitors from all other most important inbound tourism countries was down from the year before. Visitors from Russia and Sweden were the largest groups of foreign tourists in May. A total of 53,000 overnight stays at accommodation establishments were recorded for Russian visitors, which was 4 per cent more than one year before. Swedish visitors spent 42,000 overnights in Finland; the decrease amounted to 9 per cent. Germans were in third position with 33,000 overnightings. Their overnight stays decreased by 18 per cent from last year. The biggest decrease, however, was in the overnight stays of Japanese visitors. Their overnightings decreased by 22 per cent.

The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 was introduced in these Tourism Statistics starting from data concerning January 2009. The introduction has caused minor changes to data on the number of establishments in hotel statistics.
