Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 11.5 per cent in April

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in April 2008 was approximately 313,500, which was 11.5 per cent more than in April 2007. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists also went up by 6 per cent from last year. The total number of nights spent increased by 7 per cent from April 2007 and rose to close on 1.4 million overnightings. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Russians made up the largest group of foreign tourists in April 2008. They spent a total of 43,100 nights at Finnish accommodation establishments, which was just under 13 per cent more than one year earlier. Approximately 35,000 overnights stays were recorded in statistics for British and Swedish tourists. Overnight stays of British tourists increased by 38 per cent and those of Swedish tourists by nearly 6 per cent. Relatively high growth percentages were recorded also in the overnight stays of Japanese (18%) and Dutch (12%) tourists. By contrast, the overnight stays of Spanish tourists decreased by 33 per cent and those of Germans by a few per cent from April 2007.
