Impairment and credit losses of domestic banks

Impairment and credit losses of domestic banks
At the beginning of 2005, the reporting of credit institutions changed to be based on the International Accounting Standards IAS/IFRS. For this reason, not all profit and loss account and balance sheet items are comparable with earlier years.

In 2010, domestic banks’ impairment and credit losses 1) amounted to EUR 427 million. Their amount diminished by around one half form the previous year. In 2010, the share of impairment and credit losses of domestic banks’ balance sheet total was 0.1 per cent. The strong rising of impairment and credit losses that had started in early 2008 began to decline towards the end of 2009.

At the end of 2010, domestic banks employed 24 213 persons, which is 0.7 per cent fewer than one year earlier. The change in the number of hours worked was 0.3 per cent compared with the previous year. The wages and salaries paid to the personnel grew by around three per cent from the year before.

Concise preliminary data on the profit and loss statements and balance sheets of credit institutions were released on 5 April 2011. Apart from the profit and loss accounts and balance sheets of creditinstitutions, this release also contains data on the compositions of their expenditure and income items, key figures of financial statements and numbers of employees.

In these statistics the concept of domestic bank refers to a deposit bank registered in Finland, inclusive of its branch offices abroad. A list of all credit institutions covered by these statistics can be found in a separate appendix table.
