Volume of goods transported by lorries decreased heavily in the first quarter of 2009

In the first quarter of 2009, the volume of goods transported by lorries in domestic road transport decreased by 29 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2008. There data derive from the statistics on domestic road freigths compiled by Statistics Finland. A total of 67 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the January to March period of 2009. The volume of transported soil materials was 14 million tonnes while that of other goods totalled 53 million tonnes.

In the first quarter of 2009 the transport volume of lorries totalled 5,892 million tonne-kilometres of which 357 million tonne-kilometres were in private transport and 5,534 million tonne-kilometres in professional transport. Transport volume decreased by 18 per cent from the corresponding point in time in 2008. The transport volume of private transport decreased by 20 per cent and that of professional transport subject to license decreased by 18 per cent from the corresponding point in time the year before. Professional transport made up 94 per cent of the transport volume.

The vehicle kilometres of lorries, or the number of kilometres driven, totalled 540 million kilometres of which 139 million kilometres were private transport and 401 million kilometres professional transport. Professional transport made up 74 per cent of the total number of vehicle kilometres.
