Mobile connections to the Internet used actively in enterprises

Mobile connections to the Internet are used very generally in enterprises with at least ten employees. Enterprises provided nearly third of their personnel with a portable device and a mobile connection to the Internet. These data were collected by Statistics Finland with an inquiry in spring 2012 and they apply to enterprises with at least ten employees.

Of the totalled up personnel of all Finnish enterprises, 31 per cent used portable devices with connection to the Internet through mobile telephone networks. Examined by industry, such devices were used most often by employees in information and communication activities (72%). These devices were used least by employees in retail trade (8%), hotel and restaurant activities (15%), and transport and storage (17%). Examined by size category, the differences in enterprises of different sizes are relatively small, varying from 27 per cent in smaller enterprises to 33 per cent in larger enterprises.

Currently 78 per cent of enterprises have at least one portable device that allows a mobile connection to the Internet for business use. By industry, such a device is most commonly found in information and communication activities, in 98 per cent of enterprises, and least commonly in retail trade, 56 per cent. Among the smallest enterprises, with 10-19 employees, 70 per cent had such a device, and among the largest enterprises, with more than 100 employees, 98 per cent did. In all, 73 per cent of enterprises had Internet connections with laptops and 68 per cent with smart phones.

Among the enterprises that provided mobile connections to the Internet for their employees, the service could be used to access the enterprise's e-mail system in 93 per cent of the enterprises, in 70 per cent of the cases the users had access to the enterprise's documents, and in 57 per cent of cases dedicated business software applications could be used.

Among enterprises that use mobile connections to the Internet, the most common obstacle that limited or prevented the use, was connectivity problems to mobile telephone networks (31%), but also security related risks (28%), problems related to integration of business software applications (27%), and other obstacles such as lack of skills or knowledge (26%) were seen as relatively common obstacles or limitations. The high cost of the connections was more rarely seen as an obstacle that limited or prevented the use of a mobile connection to the Internet (18%).

Among enterprises that did not use mobile connections to the Internet, 68 per cent had no need for such a connection for business use. Among all enterprises, the most common obstacle that limited or prevented the use of a mobile connection to the Internet was security related risks (28%), but also other obstacles such as lack of skills or knowledge (25%), problems related to integration of business software applications (24%), and the high cost of connections (23%) were seen as common obstacles or limitations. Among enterprises that do not use mobile connections to the Internet, connectivity problems were rarely seen as an obstacle or limitation (16%).
