The number of enterprise openings decreased most in trade

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by 8.4 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2014 from the respective quarter of the year before. In the third quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise closures was up by 16.6 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities and enterprise closures were most numerous in trade. Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings and closures was highest in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,680 enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2014. Enterprise openings decreased by 8.4 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2013, when they numbered 6,203. Enterprise openings accounted for 1.7 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where they numbered 962, or 16.9 per cent of all enterprise openings in the fourth quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 922 (16.2%) and in construction 635 (11.2%).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the fourth quarter of 2014 in Uusimaa, where it was 2,156. The number of enterprise openings was next highest Varsinais-Suomi (541) and in Pirkanmaa (502). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (1.9%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Päijät-Häme (18) and decreased most in Uusimaa (-198).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,025), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (417) and Turku (375). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Helsingfors sub-regional unit (2.0%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2013, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Lahti (18) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (-206).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2014 in Helsinki (1,102), followed by Espoo (308), Tampere (291), Vantaa (227) and Turku (212). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2013, enterprise openings increased most in Tampere (21) and decreased most in Helsinki (-104).

Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2014, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 2,579 and those of the form of limited company 2,556. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 45.4 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 45.0 per cent of all enterprise openings.

Enterprise closures, 3rd quarter 2014

According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,000 enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2014. Compared to the third quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 16.6 per cent, as in the third quarter of 2013 they numbered 5,145. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.8 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2014.

Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,121, or 18.7 per cent of all enterprise closures in the third quarter. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 986 (16.4%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 916 (15.3%).

Examined by region, in the third quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (2,364). The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Varsinais-Suomi (548) and Pirkanmaa (530). Relative to the enterprise stock, Uusimaa had the most enterprise closures (2.1%). Compared to the third quarter of 2013, enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (586) and decreased most in Pohjois-Savo (–20).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the third quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,204), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (417) and Turku (359). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2.2%). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2013, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (545) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Kouvola (-23).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the third quarter of 2014 in Helsinki (1,228), followed by Espoo (307), Tampere (250), Turku (231) and Vantaa (218). Compared to the third quarter of 2013, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (337) and decreased most in Kouvola (-23).

Examined by legal form, in the third quarter of 2014, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 2,973 and those of the form of limited company 2,362. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 49.6 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 39.4 per cent of all enterprise closures.
