Number of enterprise openings still declining

According to Statistics Finland, enterprise openings continued to decline in 2012 as their number was 4.0 per cent lower than in the previous year. Enterprise closures continued to rise, as their number was 4.3 per cent higher than in 2011. Examined by industry, the numbers of enterprise openings and closures were highest in trade, and by region in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 31,186 enterprise openings in 2012. Enterprise openings accounted for 8.9 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in 2012. The number of enterprise openings decreased by 4.0 per cent from 2011. The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where it totalled 5,170, or 16.6 per cent of all enterprise openings in 2012.

There were 25,504 enterprise closures in 2012. Enterprise closures accounted for 7.2 per cent of the total stock of enterprises. The number of enterprise closures increased by 4.3 per cent from 2011. The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, where it totalled 4,855, or 19.0 per cent of all enterprise closures in 2012.

Examined by region, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings (11,201) and closures (9,050) were recorded in Uusimaa in 2012. Compared to 2011, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Kainuu (58) and decreased most in Uusimaa (-298). The number of enterprise closures increased most in Varsinais-Suomi (394) and decreased most in Päijät-Häme (-74).

Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings and closures in 2012 were recorded in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (10,478 and 8,413, respectively). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Oulu (11.3%) and that of closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (7.9%).

Examined by ELY centre, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings and closures in 2012 were recorded in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (11,201 and 9,050, respectively).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings (5,207) and closures (4,186) were recorded in Helsinki in 2012. Compared to 2011, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Oulu (117) and decreased most in Turku (-134). The number of enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (179) and decreased most in Oulu (-84).

Examined by legal form, during 2012 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 15,989 and those of the form of limited company 12,163. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 13,277 and those of the form of limited company 8,933.

These numbers include changes in enterprises resulting from incorporations and mergers, for example.
