Number of enterprise openings down on the previous year – number of closures continued to rise

The number of enterprise openings fell by 13.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2009. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in construction, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in Uusimaa. The number of enterprise closures continued to rise in the first quarter of 2009, as it had done in the respective time periods of the four preceding years. The rise amounted to 5.0 per cent from the first quarter of 2008. Examined by industry the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa and Päijät-Häme. Examined by legal form, there were nearly 10 per cent fewer openings of enterprises of the corporate form of natural person and 17 per cent fewer openings of enterprises of the corporate form of limited company than in the respective time period of the previous year.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,538 enterprise openings in the second quarter of 2009. Enterprise openings decreased by 13.2 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2008 when they numbered 8,686. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2009.

The number of enterprise openings was highest in construction, where they totalled 1,320, or 17.5 per cent of all enterprise openings in the second quarter. In trade enterprise openings numbered 1,318 (17.5%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 1,144 (15.2%).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the second quarter of 2009 in Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,427. Relative to the enterprise stock the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.7%).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the second quarter of 2009 in Helsinki (1,293), Espoo (344), Tampere (342) and Vantaa (270). Compared to the second quarter of 2008, enterprise openings increased most in Rauma (17) and decreased most in Espoo (-101).

Enterprise closures, 1st quarter of 2009

According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,118 enterprise closures in the first quarter of 2009. Compared to the first quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 5.0 per cent, as in the first quarter of 2008 they numbered 4,873. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.7 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2009.

The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, where they totalled 1,087, or 21.2 per cent of all enterprise closures. In construction enterprise closures numbered 908 (17.7%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 650 (12.7%).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the first quarter of 2009 in Uusimaa where they totalled 1,714. Relative to the enterprise stock the numbers of enterprise closures were highest, or 2.0 per cent of the stock in each, in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa and Päijät-Häme.

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the first quarter of 2009 in Helsinki (841), Tampere (259), Espoo (248) and Vantaa (208). Compared to the first quarter of 2008, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (76) and decreased most in Turku (-37).
