Description

The total statistics on income distribution describe the annual income of register households and their distribution especially from the regional perspective. The statistics depict the amount of income and its formation from different income sources when taking taxation and income transfers into consideration. Because it is a question of total data formed annually from administrative registers covering the whole population, it is also possible to make dynamic income distribution analyses (e.g. permanent low income).

Due to absence of interview data, the concepts of the total statistics on income distribution do not meet fully the national and international recommendations for income, for example, for which reason the main function of the total statistics on income distribution is to support the official income distribution statistics in the compilation of income distribution statistics. The advantage of the total statistics on income distribution over the sample-based income distribution statistics is that they can be used for analysing the income and income distribution of smaller population groups as the data cover the whole population.

Data content

Households' income, structure of income and distribution of income between different population groups. Income is classified in detail. The statistics describe the monetary gross income, earned income, entrepreneurial income and property income of households, and the income transfers received and paid by households. Disposable income, which is the key concept in these statistics, is formed from these income components.

The target population is private households. Institutional households are excluded. The basic data are confidential.

Classifications used

Size and structure of the household, age, decile groups, income brackets, gender, occupation, level of education, regional classifications (all regional divisions based on municipalities).

Data collection methods and data sources

The total data on income distribution are register data covering the whole population. All the data are collected from administrative registers. Combinations of registers are made with the help of the personal identity code.
