Public sector research and development
Description of the data collection
The inquiry on public sector research and development requests information on R&D expenditure and its funding, research personnel and R&D staff-years.
Statistics on research and development are based on the European Union’s Regulations (Decision No 1608/2003/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council and Commission Implementing Regulation No 995/2012).
The data collection is started yearly in April. The statistical period used is a calendar year.
From whom are data collected?
Data on the public sector and private non-profit institutions are collected with an inquiry addressed to all public organisations and research institutes that are assumed to be engaged in research and development. The inquiry is also sent to polytechnics and university central hospitals.
The data supply obligation is based on the Statistics Act (280/2004, Section 14).
What are the data used for?
The data are used for research and for monitoring and analysing the resources used on product and process development in public administration, organisations, research institutes and business life both in Finland and abroad, particularly in EU Member States.
The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential.
