Inquiry for business units

Description of the data collection

Statistics Finland produces establishment-based regional and industrial statistics describing the structures of production and changes in these structures in the enterprise sector. A majority of the data is collected from the Tax Administration’s business taxation file. The data are complemented with Statistics Finland's own data collection, which collects data on the breakdown of income and expenditure, investments and inventories. Previously, the data collection applied to industrial establishments but as the share of services has grown, the data collection has been expanded to apply to establishments of service industries as well.

The inquiry concerns the financial year that ended between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2016. The data collection starts annually in April.

From whom are data collected?

The inquiry covers establishments employing at least 20 persons or establishments with similar volumes.

The inquiry for industrial establishments (T5) has usually been directed to individual establishments. Alongside the inquiry for industrial establishments, Statistics Finland has launched an inquiry for business units, where the enterprise reports its activities by business unit. The business units have, when possible, been defined using the same division as the enterprise itself uses in its reporting. If this type of division has not been available, the business units have been formed using clear separation between the functionalities of the enterprise's industries as the criterion.

Data processing

The Statistics Act obliges Statistics Finland to treat the data as confidential and use them only for statistical purposes.
