Number of passengers at Finnish airports 1.7 million in December 2022

release | Air transport 2022, December

According to Statistics Finland, a total of 1.7 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in December 2022, which was 38 per cent more than one year ago, but still a quarter lower than in December 2019. The number of passengers on domestic flights grew by one fifth and on international flights by 46 per cent compared to December 2021.

Key selections

  • The monthly number of passengers exceeded 1.6 million for the first time during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • However, the number of visitors was still a quarter behind the level prior to the corona pandemic.
  • Seventy-four per cent of the passengers travelled on international flights and 26 per cent on domestic flights.

Air traffic was lively in December especially at the airports of Lapland

In December 2022, a total of 1.2 million passengers flew through Helsinki Airport and altogether 0.51 million passengers flew through other domestic airports. Helsinki Airport accounted for 70 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.

The number of passengers at Helsinki Airport was 31 per cent lower and the combined number of passengers at other domestic airports nine per cent lower than in December 2019. Enontekiö, Kittilä, Kuusamo, Rovaniemi and Tampere-Pirkkala airports are exceptions to this, as the number of passengers there exceeded the level of 2019 in December 2022. Compared to December 2021, the number of passengers was 33 per cent higher at both Helsinki Airport and other domestic airports.

The exceptionally high relative growth in the number of passengers compared to the previous year is caused by the collapse of air traffic due to the COVID-19 pandemic starting from spring 2020. The year 2019 is used in the statistics as the comparison year to describe the number of air passengers before the pandemic.

Seventy-four per cent of the air passengers travelled on international flights and 26 per cent on domestic flights. The share of passengers on international flights was 82 per cent at Helsinki Airport and 58 per cent in total at other domestic airports.

Air freight and mail transport totalled 14,485 tonnes in December 2022. In all, 99 per cent of the tonnes were transported through Helsinki Airport and 99 per cent in traffic between Finland and foreign countries. Altogether 8,195 tonnes (57%) of the transported volume of goods were outgoing and 6,290 tonnes (43%) were incoming.
