New statistics on the turnover of large enterprises

Statistics Finland will start publishing new monthly statistics on the turnover estimate of large enterprises from 28 May 2014 onwards. The turnover estimate of large enterprises describes the development of turnover in the most important enterprises in each industry at a lag of approximately one month from the end of the statistical reference month.

The turnover estimate of large enterprises describes the trend development of the largest enterprises so the data of the statistics can be used for short-term monitoring of development in business activities and the market together with other statistics on economic trends.

The turnover estimate of large enterprises is based on a sample of 2,000 enterprises within the industries of manufacturing, construction, trade and other services. Primary production and financial intermediation and insurance are excluded from the statistics.

The enterprises described in the statistics generate nearly 70 per cent of the turnover of all enterprises operating in Finland, are responsible for one-half of the investments made, and employ good 40 per cent of the personnel of all enterprises.

More detailed information concerning different industries based on the total data are published at a lag of ten weeks from the end of the statistical reference month. Preliminary data are published for certain industries within trade at a lag of six weeks. In addition, instant preliminary data on retail trade are published at a lag of just under one month from the end of the statistical reference month.
