UN sustainable development indicators for Finland compiled into a new website

Statistics Finland has published a website open for all on the UN indicators for sustainable development, from which it is possible to follow the attainment of the sustainable development goals of the UN’s Agenda 2030 in Finland. The indicators can be viewed by means of database tables and figures. The website is published in Finnish and English.

“Through the database, national and international users can view indicator data concerning Finland and the metadata relating to them,” says Statistics Finland’s Head of Development Ari Tyrkkö.

In 2015, the UN's General Assembly agreed on the action plan and goals for sustainable development for the years 2016 to 2030. Agenda 2030 includes good 240 global indicators for monitoring sustainable development worldwide. Statistics Finland is responsible for the collection, updating and publication of indicator data in Finland. Statistics Finland also submits monitoring data relating to Finland to international organisations.

Indicators are collected by means of a large cooperation network

With funding from the Prime Minister's Office, Statistics Finland carried out a project in 2018 to explore and compile global UN indicators for sustainable development in Finland. To support the work, a network was formed of national actors whose data could be used to produce an optimally large share of the indicators.

”At the moment, data are not yet available for all global indicators from national or international sources. Statistics Finland continues to supplement the data by exploring new data sources and by looking for possible replacing indicators. International development work is also made to complement the data sources,” says Ari Tyrkkö.

The producer network of sustainable development indicators includes 11 organisations. In addition to Statistics Finland, the annually updated indicator data are produced by the National Institute for Health and Welfare, the Natural Resources Institute Finland, the Finnish Environment Institute, the Prime Minister's Office, the National Board of Education, the Finnish Immigration Service, and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
