Population and its age structure form the basis on which the functioning of society is mostly built. The purpose of this course is to provide basic information with which to understand the factors that have an effect on population development.
This web course examines how demography has evolved over centuries into a field of science in its own right, and how various key ratios are used to describe changes in population - birth rate, mortality rate, migration and marriages and divorces. The course gives an introduction to the history of demography and analyses which factors have contributed to the birth of demography.
The course presents the key concepts of demography and helps to understand their content and explores the factors influencing population changes. These are described by means of examples and exercises and by giving hints for finding additional information. One goal of the course is to provide basic information for students so that they can understand the relationship between population development and economic and social development of society.
This course covers in concise form the topics belonging to basic education on demography. The course forms a whole that can be followed by students at upper secondary schools as well as by all those interested in demography. After having completed the course, students can read and understand articles and surveys dealing with population change factors. During the course students will also gain basic knowledge for applying the methods of demography into their own work.
