5.7 Age

Age is usually calculated in full years, in which case it refers to the number of years on the latest birthday. A child born is 0 years old in the first year of her life and after her first birthday she becomes one year old.

Age is a very central concept in demography, similarly as in life itself. Demand for various services depends on age and how many people are at a certain age. Finnish children go to school at the age of seven and the number of school starters is entirely dependent on how many children become seven during the year.

In population statistics age is usually determined at the end of the year or at the time of some vital event, such as moving. Then the actual vital event may take place before or after the birthday.

If a person born on 23 May 1963 moves in February 2000, he or she is 37, but if the moving takes place after the birthday, he or she is already 38.
