5.5 Population size

Population size varies according to the area in question. The population of the world (around 6.2 billion) is very unevenly divided by country. The over one billion populations of China and India make up as much as 37 per cent of the population of the world.

The smallest independent country by population is the Vatican governed by the Pope where about 1,000 persons are living. The next smallest countries can be found in the Pacific islands, the smallest ones being Tuvalu and Nauru, both with a population of 12,000.

In 2000 the population of Finland was 5,181,115. Countries with a population equal to Finland are Slovakia, Denmark, Jordan and Nicaragua.

Finland's smallest municipality, Sottunga, had a population of only 129 at the end of 2000, while Helsinki, by contrast, has over half a million inhabitants.

Population data and many other statistics are available by country on Statistics Finland's World in Figures pages at: http://www.stat.fi/tup/maanum/index_en.html.
