Road traffic accidents claimed 27 lives in August

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 680 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in August. In them, 27 persons were killed and 821 persons injured. The number of persons killed was five lower and that of persons injured 15 higher than in August 2011.

Of the persons who were killed, 14 travelled by passenger car, three by lorry and five by motorcycle. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered one and cyclists three. In addition, one other road user was killed. Among those who died, 25 were men and two were women.

A total of 3,738 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in the January to August period. In them, 183 persons were killed and 4,585 persons injured. The number of persons killed was nine lower and that of persons injured 682 lower than in the corresponding period of 2011. Of the person who were killed, 110 travelled by passenger car, eight by lorry, eight by van, one by bus or coach, 17 by motorcycle and four by moped. Pedestrians killed numbered 18 and cyclists nine. In addition, eight other road users were killed.
