Road traffic claimed 292 lives in 2011

A total of 6,408 road traffic accidents involving personal injury occurred in 2011. In them, 292 persons were killed and 7,931 injured. There were 20 more fatalities than in 2010.

Examined by age group, the number of road traffic fatalities increased most among the elderly (aged over 74 years). Fatalities among them numbered 46, which is 18 more than in 2010. A total of 36 people, or the same number as in 2010, died in the 65 to 74 age group. The number of road traffic fatalities increased slightly among young people. A total of 65 young people (aged 15 to 24) died in road traffic, which is four more than in 2010. One in five of those killed in road traffic was a young person.

A total of 41 pedestrians were killed in 2011, which is six more than in 2010. One in two of the victims was aged over 64. The number of cyclists’ road traffic deaths (19) fell clearly from the year before (26). Two in three of the victims were aged over 64. The number of motorcyclists killed grew clearly. There were 28 fatalities, which is 12 more than in 2010. Twelve of the fatalities were caused by swerving accidents.
