Road traffic claimed 272 lives in 2010

A total of 6,072 road traffic accidents involving personal injury occurred in 2010. In them, 272 persons were killed and 7,673 injured. There were seven fewer fatalities than in 2009.

Examined by age group, the number of road traffic fatalities decreased most among the elderly (aged over 74 years). Fatalities numbered 28, which is 17 fewer than in 2009. The number of persons killed in the 65 to 74 age group was 36, or 12 more than in 2009. The number of road traffic fatalities among young people also fell. A total of 61 young people (aged 15 to 24) died in traffic, which is 13 fewer than in 2009. One in five of those having died in traffic was a young person. The number of road traffic fatalities among middle-aged people (aged 45 to 54) increased clearly. In 2010, the number of middle-aged people having died in road traffic was 47, which is 21 more than in 2009.

A total of 35 pedestrians were killed in 2010, which is five more than in 2009. Forty per cent of the victims were elderly. Relative to the population, elderly pedestrians have twice the risk of death compared to the whole population. The number of cyclists’ road traffic fatalities (26) went up slightly from the year before (20). Nearly one-half of the victims were elderly. Relative to the population, elderly cyclists have twice the risk of death compared to the whole population. Road traffic fatalities among moped riders (9) decreased from the year before (11). The number of injured moped riders has grown 2.5-fold in the past decade. The number of injured moped riders decreased for the first time in eight years. In 2010, a total of 988 moped riders sustained injuries, which is 136 fewer than in 2009.
