Road traffic accidents claimed 22 lives in December

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 446 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in December. In them, 22 persons were killed and 576 persons injured. The number of persons killed was the same as in December 2009 and that of persons injured 33 lower.

Of the persons who were killed, 17 travelled by passenger car and 2 by lorry. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered 2 and cyclists 1. Among those who died, 14 were men and 8 were women.

A total of 6,059 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in the January to December period. In them, 270 persons were killed and 7,661 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 11 lower and that of persons injured 387 lower than in the corresponding period of 2009. Of the person who were killed, 160 travelled by passenger car, 9 by lorry, 9 by van, 16 by motorcycle and 9 by moped. Pedestrians killed numbered 34 and cyclists 25. In addition, 8 other road users were killed.
