Road traffic accidents claimed 25 lives in August

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 739 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in August. In them, 25 persons were killed and 922 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 2 lower and that of persons injured 65 higher than in August 2008.

Of the persons who were killed, 11 travelled by passenger car, 2 by van and 6 by motorcycle. Pedestrians killed in road traffic accidents numbered 1 and cyclists 4. In addition, 1 other road user was killed. Among those who died, 21 were men and 4 were women.

A total of 4 226 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in the January to August period. In them, 190 persons were killed and 5 370 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 14 lower and that of persons injured 219 lower than in the corresponding period of 2008. Of the person who were killed, 115 travelled by passenger car, 5 by lorry, 8 by van, 1 by bus or coach, 23 by motorcycle and 4 by moped. Pedestrians killed numbered 16 and cyclists 11. In addition, 7 other road users were killed.
