The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 will be introduced in the statistics on new orders in manufacturing in March 2009 when publishing data on January 2009.
Further information is available from Jukka Appelqvist, +358 9 1734 3391, volyymi.indeksi@stat.fi
The following groupings according to TOL 2008 will be published from the statistics on new orders in manufacturing:
Manufacturing industries (13-14, 17, 20-21, 24-30)
Textile industry (13-14)
Paper industry (17)
Chemical industry (20-21)
Metal industry (24-30)
The groupings consist of the following two-digit level divisions of TOL 2008 section C Manufacturing.
13 Manufacture of textiles
14 Manufacture of wearing apparel
17 Manufacture of paper and paper products
20 Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products
21 Manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical
preparations
24 Manufacture of basic metals
25 Manufacture of fabricated metal products
26 Manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products
27 Manufacture of electrical equipment
28 Manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c.
29 Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers
30 Manufacture of other transport equipment
The TOL 2008 section C Manufacturing corresponds mostly to the TOL 2002 section D Manufacturing.Detailed descriptions of the classes can be found on Statistics Finland's web pages under Classifications.
During the transition period up to the middle of 2011, certain statistics will continue to publish data classified by TOL 2002. In cases where series according to the old classification are used in conjunction with series according to the new classification, data according to the two different industrial classifications need to be combined.
The series of new orders in manufacturing according to TOL 2008 have been formed to correspond as much as possible to the series by TOL 2002. Consequently, the names of the published combination series will not change. The change in the nomenclature applies only to the TOL 2008 two-digit level divisions included in them.
The industry of several enterprises included in the sample changes under the new industrial classification. These changes mostly occur within the publication levels of the statistics and the change in industrial classification does not cause significant changes to the published series.
However, some of the enterprises included in the statistics on new orders in manufacturing move from TOL 2002 industries to TOL 2008 industries that are not included in the statistics.
Retrospective data starting from 2005 will be published on all the series of the statistics on new orders in manufacturing according to the new industrial classification. The series are recalculated from the original enterprise level data.
The change in industrial classification will not affect the accuracy of data. Adjusting the weight structure according to the new classification and updating the sample used in calculating the statistics will, however, cause some changes to the previously published series.
There is a news item on the transition to TOL 2008 of the statistics on new orders in manufacturing on the home page of the statistics.
The effects of the new industrial classification on manufacturing industries have been discussed also in the Fokus section of the industry review 2/2008 (Finnish only).
