Volume of goods transported by lorries decreased in the second quarter of 2019

A total of 57 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the second quarter of 2019, which was 12 per cent lower than in the corresponding period one year earlier. The volume of transported soil materials decreased by 33 per cent and the volume of transport of other goods increased by five per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

In the second quarter of 2019, the total transport volume of lorries amounted to 6.0 billion tonne-kilometres, which was five per cent lower than in the corresponding period one year earlier. Ninety-two per cent of the transport volume was transported in professional transport and eight per cent in private transport.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
