Volume of goods transported by lorries decreased in the third quarter of 2016

A total of 68 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries in the third quarter of 2016, which was 15 per cent less than in the corresponding quarter in 2015. The volume of transported soil materials decreased by 26 per cent and the volume of transport for other goods went down by eight per cent compared to the third quarter of 2015. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

The total transport volume of lorries amounted to 6.5 billion tonne-kilometres in the third quarter of 2016, which was nine per cent more than in the corresponding quarter of one year before. Ninety-four per cent of the transport volume was transported in professional transport and six per cent in private transport.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
