Wages and salaries sum grew by 4.8 per cent in November to January year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 4.8 per cent greater in the November to January period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In January, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 4.4 per cent from the year before. One year previously in November to January, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 4.0 per cent.

The wages and salaries sum increased faster than the whole economy in the industries of private health and social work (6.5%), construction (5.2%) and other services (5.0%). The increase in the wages and salaries sum was more moderate in the industries of manufacturing (3.7%), financial intermediation (3.2%), trade (3.1%) and private education (2.8%).

The wages and salaries sum in the public sector was 5.5 per cent greater in November to January than twelve months earlier. The wages and salaries sum of the private sector was 5.0 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year previously. In January, the wages and salaries sum in the public sector grew by 7.9 per cent and in the private sector by 3.7 per cent year-on-year. In the November to January period one year ago, the wages and salaries sum grew by 5.5 per cent in the private sector and by 1.3 per cent in the public sector from the year before.

The wages and salaries sum refers to the sum total of the gross wages and salaries paid to employees without incentive stock options. The wages and salaries sum is influenced by changes in employment and in the earnings level of wage and salary earners.

Data for January 2019 are published using new source data

Statistics Finland publishes wage and salary indices for January 2019 in June 2019. The data used are the data reported to the Incomes Register that have been deficient in the early part of 2019 due to deficiencies in the reports. The January data that are published now can become revised as the wage and salary reports in the Incomes Register are supplemented with data for January.
