Retail trade sales fell by 4.8 per cent in May
According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales fell by 4.8 per cent in May from May 2008. Wholesale trade sales fell by 25.0 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 41.9 per cent. In total trade sales fell by 22.1 per cent in May. The fall in sales was partly caused by the different timing of holidays in May in 2008 and 2009. This May contained two fewer trading days than the corresponding month last year.
In retail trade sales in January-May diminished by 2.6 per cent. During the same time period motor vehicle sales were 33.1 per cent and wholesale trade sales 19.3 per cent down on the year before. In total trade sales fell by 17.2 per cent in January-May.

Turnover in new car sales has been recorded according to a revised accounting practice since data concerning April. Motor car tax is no longer included in turnover as in the past. An estimation of the share of the motor car tax in last year's April-May has been removed from the annual change shown for this April-May.
