Consumption of hard coal decreased by 14 per cent in 2012

According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, consumption of hard coal decreased by 14 per cent in January to December last year from the respective period of the year before. Its total consumption as fuel in the generation of electricity and heat amounted to around 3.6 million tonnes, corresponding to about 86 petajoule in energy content. Use of hard coal decreased in plants of separate production of electricity, which consumed 57 less of it than a year earlier in 2011.

Consumption of hard coal, 1,000 tonnes
The data for 2012 is preliminary.

In January to December last year, the consumption of hard coal was 37 per cent down from the aver-age for the corresponding period of the 2000s. At the end of December 2012, stocks of hard coal to-talled close on four million tonnes, or 14 per cent less than one year earlier. Separate production of condensate power decreased by 42 per cent in 2012. The slight increase in electricity consumption in manufacturing, the cold last part of the year, smaller water reserves in the Nordic countries and low prices of emission rights and in part, availability of peat are the reasons for the growth in consumption of coal in the second half of the year. The consumption data for coal were updated until the year 2000 due to the revised annual data.
